SONG: We Will Go On

“We Will Go On”

This song is called “We Will Go On.” It’s a tune about relationships; it was me in my 20s imagining what the life-long arc of love is like. I probably had my parent’s marriage in the back of my mind — all the ups and downs, what it takes to love after the fairy-tale romance has worn off. Now that I’m 14 years into my own marriage, I feel like it holds up pretty well.

We Will Go On

Our love is like a wild stallion,

far too strong to wear a bit;

It races ‘cross the golden pastures;

but I wonder if, its legs should tire,

will we still feel, this same desire?

But we are young, with strength to ride.

We will ride on,

we will ride on,

we will ride on,

we will go on.

Our love is like a roaring river,

that carries us out to the sea.

But the boat of our compromises,

has sprung a leak, and I can’t see,

where it’s weak, so we’ll have to keep,

on bailing water, and rowing on.

We will row on,

we will row on,

we will row on,

we will go on.

Our love is like a mighty fortress,

and we are safe within its keep.

But there are times I hear you weeping,

when you’re asleep, do you see,

a land beyond, where the grass is green?

But when you rise, you keep building on.

We will build on,

we will build on,

we will build on,

we will go on.

I know by now,

that love is not a dream.

But there’s still much more,

that we can explore,

on this winding stream.

Our love is like a gnarled oak tree,

with moss growing on the broken bark.

But our roots are deep and thirsty,

and though our buds, dropped long ago;

our branches reach, through wind and snow,

to the fading sun, and still we grow.

We will grow on,

we will grow on,

we will grow on,

we will go on.
