Behind the Song
I had in mind a woman singing to a man. She falls in love and is ready to commit to him at a young age. But he’s already out the door.
Life moves on. She stays committed to the things she loves. He keeps on moving, trying to find something else.
But, like the boy at the end of The Giving Tree, he gets old and tired and can’t run anymore. He goes to join her.
Does she take him back? I don’t say. But he puts down some roots at last.

Lyrics
When I was seventeen and you were twenty-one I gave you everything but you were just having fun. So I'll grow this garden, while you run. I'll grow this garden, while you run. When I was twenty-eight and you were thirty-two I found my destiny but you didn't have a clue. So I'll grow this garden, while you run. I'll grow this garden, while you run. When I was forty-one and you were forty-five I raised a family but you were lucky to be alive. No, it's not easy, to decide who you're gonna be No, there's no guarantee, but there's only one way you will see. When I was fifty-five and you were fifty-nine you grew a garden right next to mine. So we'll grow our gardens, while we still have sun. We'll grow our gardens, while we still have sun.
