Song: “Troubled World”

“Troubled World”

Behind the Song

The first line came to me one day when I was feeling both bitter and perverse. “It’s a troubled world, but I feel fine.” My first draft contained more irony — I juxtaposed troubling world events with an unconcerned narrator.

But I didn’t really like it; felt a little sophmoric, a little bit like taking potshots at “first world problems.”

Like many of my songs, I’m trying to prod myself with a bit of advice. In this case: don’t let your worries get you down.

Lyrics

It's a troubled world
but I'm doing fine
I've got time to sip my wine.

It's a troubled world
but I'm okay
gonna take a long walk today.

Why spread your worries?
Why try to bring me down?
Don't you see the green shoots growing
in this old town?

Why get so mad
when you can get ahead?
There's more to living
than not being dead
in a troubled world.

It's a troubled world
but no flies on me
I feel the sand and I smell the sea.

It's a troubled world
or so I've been told
but I built a fire to drive out the cold.

Why spread your worries?
Why try to bring me down?
Don't you see the green shoots growing
in this old town?

Why get so mad
when you can get ahead?
There's more to living
than not being dead
in a troubled world.

It's a troubled world
but I feel okay
gonna take a long walk today.
