Behind the Song
A love song today.
I don’t recall what was on my ming when I thought of the first line. But the lines quickly tumbled into the chorus, “bring me home.”
My first draft featured a story progression. The first verse was the same as you hear it today, but the second verse was a conversation with the narrator’s love, asking if they could find the way home. I also had a third verse that saw the couple making their way home.
I like story songs that follow a traditional three-act structure, but my first draft felt a little contrived. Maybe it was just the imagery I used; by diving deeper, perhaps I could have fashioned it into a workable piece.
But I decided to take the song elsewhere after the first chorus. Now the second verse expands on why the narrator wants to go “home.” It became my favorite verse of the song.

Lyrics
Will you be the one to catch me when I can't go on?
Will you be the one to strip the shadows from the sun?
When my hands can't hold the scepter, will you brace my shaking grip?
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
Bring me home
bring me home
to a place I've never known.
Bring me home
bring me home
from this waste of ash and bone.
Bring me home
bring me home
so I'll never feel alone.
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
I have spent my swan days searching for a silver spring.
I have bent my ear to listening for a sweeter ring.
But now I'd trade these trinkets for a stranger's passing grin --
Will you be the one to bring me home?
Bring me home
bring me home
to a place I've never known.
Bring me home
bring me home
from this waste of ash and bone.
Bring me home
bring me home
so I'll never feel alone.
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
A home spun from starlight
A home strong as stone
A home to last as long as
these eyes can see the dawn.
Bring me home
bring me home
to a place I've never known.
Bring me home
bring me home
from this waste of ash and bone.
Bring me home
bring me home
so I'll never feel alone.
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
Say you'll be the one
to strip the shadows from the sun
Say you'll be the one to bring me home.
