Behind the Song

This song sprang to life from an idea. My working title was “Enlightenment Lost” — the idea was those to contrast those moments when you feel at peace with the ensuing moments when the world breaks in and you’re brought back to earth. I ended up writing a monologue in which a character unpacks this idea. Someday I might record that.

But I realized I covered some of that ground in my song “Perfect Day” (which I relecently performed live but haven’t published on this site yet).

So I wanted to take a different appraoch. I heard the words “I found heaven but I lost it. Picked it up, but I must have dropped it. Guess I had a hole in my pocket.” I liked it, it tickled me, like the whimsical feel.

I expanded on that and made it into a love song. That’s what you’ll hear today.

More wistful than bittersweet, call it 65%

Lyrics

I'm just a simple man most of the time
I'm happy with my brand of beer, I don't try new wines
I'm not the one on top, but I'm doin' fine
the stars and moon can stay just where they are

but heaven came a knocking
and I wish I'd been away
'cause heaven came and found me
but heaven, heaven, heaven --
heaven didn't stay.

I found heaven but I lost it
yeah, yeah
I picked it up but I musta dropped it
yeah, yeah
guess I had a hole in my pocket
yeah, yeah
Heaven came for me today
but heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

I never had much use for inner peace
the only balance I seek is stayin' on my feet
just a little sunshine is all I need
I wouldn't know how to live above the clouds

but heaven came a knocking
and I wish I'd been away
'cause heaven came and found me
but heaven, heaven, heaven --
heaven didn't stay.

I found heaven but I lost it
yeah, yeah
I picked it up but I musta dropped it
yeah, yeah
guess I had a hole in my pocket
yeah, yeah
Heaven came for me today
but heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You don't have to warn me from greeed
no, no, no
I know the kinda thorns grow from that seed
yeah, yeah
give me glass, not diamon
instead of marble, give me stone
something I can use to build
a simple, sturdy home

Yeah, I'm lookin' for love, but I don't need bliss
just someone to hold at night and share a kiss
just someone to need and someone to miss
I don't have to hear the angels sing

but heaven came a knocking
and I wish I'd been away
'cause heaven came and found me
but heaven, heaven, heaven --
heaven didn't stay.

I found heaven but I lost it
yeah, yeah
I picked it up but I musta dropped it
yeah, yeah
guess I had a hole in my pocket
yeah, yeah
Heaven came for me today
but heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
heaven didn't stay
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
