Behind the Song
This song started with me picking some arpeggios on the guitar. I liked a particular chord progression and began to add some words. The first line, “I don’t love you like I should/You don’t leave me like you could” came pretty quick, and I built the song on that idea.
It starts out pretty clear in the first verse: The narrator doesn’t love his lover as much as he ought to, despite the fact the lover sticks around: “Is it pity or companionship you seek? Or a promise that you see in me?”
But then in the second verse the camera widens a bit, and maybe this isn’t just a love song: “I can hear the things they’ll say of me … he lived his life like he had ten more tries” … so maybe it’s something else that he doesn’t love enough.
Note: When I recorded the video, I forgot the title and said it was “I don’t love you like I should.” The title is actually “This Day.”
