Behind the Song

My song journal tells me I wrote a complete first draft in about 10 minutes. I don’t remember what was on my mind, but I had just finished listening to an indie music mix on Amazon with acts like The 6ths and Mates of the State.

You may notice, loyal reader, this has happened to me more than once: I listen to new music, hear something I like, feel inspired, and jot down a song.

In this case, most of the original draft made it into the final, with a few tweaks in the verses and new bridge lyrics.

As promised, more bitter with the sweet.

Lyrics

Have you been to Neverene?
I don't recall the way
if you find it, you will know
you will want to stay

golden rivers bathing
cotton candy shores
smiling faces greet you
from a street of open doors

That's Neverene, that's Neverene
Oh Neverene, fabled and fair
That's Neverene, that's Neverene
Oh Neverene, the land without care
So many riches to spare, in Neverene
but you won't find me there

Have you been to Neverene?
you've got that diamond look
I see the stardust in your smile
your soul's an open book

your laughter is infectious
kneeding knots from my spine
your eyes have got me hoping
you could be mine

That's Neverene, that's Neverene
Oh Neverene, fabled and fair
That's Neverene, that's Neverene
Oh Neverene, the land without care
So many riches to spare, in Neverene
but you won't find me there

Why do we only understand
when we're at the end?
Why do we only know what we want
when there's no more time to spend?

Have you been to Neverene?
why have you returned?
what could you be searching for
that the heavens have spurned

the sand here is dirty
it's warm but it grates
every love here is tethered
to the hazard of hate

But not in Neverene, not Neverene
Oh Neverene, fabled and fair
Oh Neverene, oh Neverene
Oh Neverene, the land without care
So many riches to spare, in Neverene
but you won't find me there
