Behind the Song

This song started with the music. Here’s the opening entry for this song in my journal, dated May 31, 2022:

“So I’ve got a riff, a melody, with C Am for verse, F C prechorus, Am F G chorus I like, but no song concept yet.

“My first thought was a forlorn ex-lover ‘twilight is breaking.’ [For the first line of the song.]

“But now I’m thinking I’d like to set a scene, paint a picture of a place, maybe a bar at closing, maybe describe a cast of characters.”

As you can hear, this song never did evolve into a musical version of Cheers. But my journal continues with snatches of imagery, including “Sea salt tang on the breeze. Soft peak white caps on the evening sea” … “Sipping a summer apricot ale” … “Kindle a fire in the pit, twists of newspaper crackle ablaze, firing coals which glow like dying red suns.”

These images sprang from my memories of living in a house on the Salish Sea, back when my wife and I were first married. These images multiplied and crowded out random characters. So I decided to make the song about an idyllic version of that time in our lives, travelling to one summer evening, after a long day’s work, which passes gently into night.

Sweet and mellow

Lyrics

Sweat coats my forehead
like varnish on pine
the sunset makes everything shine

My body is weary
but my spirit is free
'cause I'm finally where I want to be

Floating away on a bottle of beer
and the smell of the seaweed-strewn sea

Bright is the moon on the ocean
white are the waves on the sea
night when my love lies waiting
waiting for me, waiting for me

The sea grass is swaying
with the on-shoring breeze
as you balance a book on your knees

I burrow my toes
in the heat of the sand
my neck stroked by your smooth-skinned hands

Bright is the moon on the ocean
white are the waves on the sea
night when my love lies waiting
waiting for me, waiting for me

The ferry is smoothing
the waves from the sea
soft-peak white caps plowed to foam
I'm going nowhere
but straight to your side
your anchor's the key to my home

The stars start to kindle
in the deep lilac sky
pulsing with the promise of life

Our voices mingle
with the murmuring surf
they rise and they fall back to earth

We follow the breeze
to the shore of our bed
where our bodies and spirits are wed

Bright is the moon on the ocean
white are the waves on the sea
night when my love lies waiting
waiting for me, waiting for me
