Behind the Song
The song started life with the writing of the chorus. And the chorus never changed much from the first scribble to the finished song. Not sure where it came from … maybe I was strumming the guitar and the words came to me.
I liked those words and decided to build a song around the idea suggested by them, that of leaving something.
After writing down a few unrelated vignettes, I settled on the scene for the song, which isn’t revealed until the final verse.

Lyrics
Do you recall those parties we used to throw? Costumes required, man we put on a show all agreed we bathed our block in a golden glow -- but the clock ticked ten, everyone had to go But I don't want the party to end don't wanna leave my new friend I don't want to watch the last light of day fade away fade away fade away fade away It's like that summer I stood in a ring holding hands with fast new friends, we began to sing with swelling voices, we took wing then you honked your horn, and I felt the sting 'Cause I don't want the party to end don't wanna leave my new friend I don't want to watch the last light of day fade away fade away fade away fade away Could we steal a moment or two? before you slide into sleep or will that scatter a stain? on the memories we keep You look so tiny in your folding bed where's the giant who once scraped the sky with my head? I finally feel brave enough to be led but the nurse peeks in, says it's time I sped But I don't want the party to end don't wanna leave my new friend I don't want to watch the last light of day fade away fade away fade away fade away
