Behind the Song
I don’t recall where this song came from, or how it began. Maybe it started as a chord progression and the melody followed. The first lines in my songwriting notebook read “Killing time in paradise,” which ultimately became the last line of the song. So it looks like the chorus, or elements of it, came first … an image of reaching the dream, only to feel bored, or unsatisfied.
The second line of the song, “Ain’t this the best day we had?” was inspired by a collection of speeches by Kurt Vonnegut titled If This Isn’t Nice, What Is? Which was a line of his uncle, who taught Kurt to enjoy the sweet things in life as they come by.

Lyrics
Why you looking so sad? Ain't this the best day we had? What are you wanting from me? What are you hoping to see? I've seen life at the end of the rainbow the colored lights all in a row I've spent time at the end of the rainbow in paradise, living low Let's take a dip in the creek maybe you'll find what you seek it's not a day at the beach but at least it's in reach I've seen life at the end of the rainbow holding hands with a god I've spent time at the end of the rainbow in paradise, feeling odd Life's not a problem to solve it's a song to be sung while you've been looking up ladders I'm halfway up the rungs I'm afraid there's no crystal ball that predicts every fall you may be smart as they get but you can't outrun regret I've seen life at the end of the rainbow all the pretty people in a line I've spent time at the end of the rainbow in paradise, killing time
