Behind the Song
This song started, like many of my songs do, with the first line of the first verse.
Once I had that, I had the entire idea for the song.
But the devil was in the details. I worked and re-worked it many times over several months. Added verses, removed verses, changed the key, changed the strumming to an arpeggio-pick, changed the tempo/delivery from fast & forceful to soft & smooth.
I’m happy where it ended up.
It’s a sort of an anti-rom-com song: love is more than just a feeling.
(Don’t get me wrong: I love a good rom-com. When Harry Met Sally is one of my favorite movies.)
Sure, those feelings gotta be there, especially to get the ball rolling. But then there’s something else. I hate to call it “work” — I don’t like to think of it that way (I guess I still hear the echo of rom-com magical thinking) — but that’s probably what it is. Maybe “effort” is a more palatable word.
I know I’m not saying anything new with this, but I hope you like how I say it.
